I know they said this season's payroll was going to be a bit smaller but that was due to JD Drew and Dice-K's money coming off from the books. At most the recent signings are closer to the other players they removed or from the extra saved when Papelbon left in terms of money. |
They didn't dump Dice-K's money though, they still have him for the year and still have to pay him the $10M, he just won't be pitching most likely.
I think a huge thing with the Red Sox payroll wise is that Gonzalez jumps from a salary of $5.5M last year to $21M this year. And Crawford goes from $14M to $19.5M.
