I think a huge thing with the Red Sox payroll wise is that Gonzalez jumps from a salary of $5.5M last year to $21M this year. And Crawford goes from $14M to $19.5M.

So basically someone on either NESN or ESPN was mostly wrong on the money that was coming off the books for this season which in theory was supposed to help lower the salary a bit and improve the dreadful bullpen. Papelbon leaving added in an extra $12+ million which A-Gon's contract jump ate up easily.
