I kinda agree with bad CD mastering. Rick Rubin being one of the biggest contributors as far as poor production is concerned. I will also say that a digital vinyl rip of Death Magnetic sounds way better than the CD. Probably because the sound is very raw and real. The CDs were a victim of horrible clipping.
There are new albums which are actually being mastered for iTunes. In my honest opinion, the tracks offered for purchase on iTunes are below average. If you have a good pair of headphones, you can tell.
I am glad that bands like Radiohead and NIN are giving away their music in a variety of formats. Online digital stores such as 7Digital have started giving out a few albums in FLAC (both 16-bit and 24-bit).
There is this website by the name of HDTracks.com. Although they have a very limited catalog, the songs are more clearer and rich in details
