If Cashman can get the Pirates to eat $13M of AJs contract and get two prospects back (I don't expect anybody good here, I imagine it'd just be minors depth type players) that'd be great. A lot more than I thought he'd be able to get for AJ.
As for why the Pirates would want AJ, I'd imagine its basically because nobody wants to sign there. They offered Edwin Jackson a three year $30M deal but he turned it down to go to the Nationals on a 1 year/$11M deal. Doesn't seem like anyone has interest in signing there.
That said I thought they'd be able to do a better deal than for AJ. His stuff has clearly diminished the past couple years and I can't imagine he's getting any better. A flamethrowing pitcher that never really learned how to "pitch" was always bound to be a disaster when he gets older and loses his stuff.
The AL-to-NL switch will obviously help but I don't think AJ would even be worth the $6-7M the Pirates would be paying. I'd be happy though.
