A more simplified analogy is to say that Death Metal is a heavier Thrash metal with distorted/growl vocals, while Black Metal is a depressive reflection of power metal.
I would say the genres are, Trash, Power, Death, Black and Doom. I see "nu- metal" as more relevant to pop music, than to any genre of metal.
