Actually, now that I look at the Mets roster, this is the fewest Opening Day roster spots they've had to fill entering spring in a very long time...which is odd considering how underwhelming the team looks on paper.
From what I can see, they really only need to fill the final bench spot (probably going to go to a lefty outfielder, ST invites Adam Loewen and Mike Baxter are the main candidates) and a final bullpen spot (probably going to be a lefty, I'd say Chuck James has the early edge since he can also be a swingman and throw multiple innings). I guess Mike Nickeas could play his way out of the backup catcher spot too if he has a horrendous spring...but he's already on the 40-man roster and it's not like Rob Johnson or Lucas May are anything to write home about. Everybody else is set in stone.
Just seems kinda weird. The teams in years past that have looked a lot better on paper had way more spots up for grabs than they do now. Probably speaks volumes about the organization at this point that they really can't afford to bring any new guys in.
