Free agency is stupid for the most part. Every once in a while you get a Drew Brees to New Orleans deal, or a situation like Terrell Owens/Randy Moss/Steve Hutchinson to Philadelphia/New England/Seattle where a team had everything thing else together, along perhaps with a few other subtle things, but what you usually end up with are the same over-hyped rosters. Peyton Manning to Denver could be a game changer (ie Denver losing in the AFC Championship game), but I doubt Buffalo, for example, is really that much better off with Mario Williams. More often than not it's downhill once a player goes to a new team, especially if they're veterans that have been in the league a few years. It mostly affects the teams that lose players, or makes a mediocre team slightly above average because they signed Matt Schaub.
Kicker/punter/special teams tends to be the exception I guess, although even that is hit or miss.
