That's probably what makes it that much more suspect. I believe it would be different if you were talking about a group of defensive backs getting together and having a pool for who gets the most interceptions or linebackers having their own pool for who gets the most sacks or tackles.

Instead, you had a coach promoting a system where players were awarded for "knockouts" and "cart-offs" with "knockouts" being worth more than "cart-offs." It implies something a bit more sinister that goes beyond the nature of the game.

I also think Payton got it worse because apparently the Saints were warned, he allowed it to continue and lied to the commissioner's office about it.
