Also, to those saying this isn't even close to the batman films, I think it is a bit unfair to compare the two. Yes, they are both superhero flicks, but they are two very differnt kinds of movies.

Dark Knight is the perfect dark, gritty, realistic supero movie, while Avengers is the perfect colorful, explosive, as-far-from-reality-as-you-can-get, super hero movie.

They both are the be all and end all of their kind, and which is better comes down to personal preference.

For me, I grew up with X-men and Avengers, and seeing giant battles unfolding accross massive cityscapes. People and things beyond your wildest imagination waging epic clashes. That is what The Avengers is. It takes the scale of the battles right from the page, and the spectacle alone, is enough to put it over The Dark Knight, for me.
