The general consensus seems to be "No matter what you think is important, someone else will make fun of you because it's stupid."
For some people, what a flag represents is highly important. For others, it's a religious symbol. For some it's drugs or alcohol, and yet others it's cash money. Where some people think trees and wildlife are important, others feel tech and progress is what matters. (These are all things that I have witnessed be a driving force in the life of people I have known.) What someone thinks is important can take any form.
There will always people who will tell you that what is important to you is fucking stupid.
