I'm not suggesting that people in Alabama are backwards or anything.
The point I'm making is that information would have moved very slowly in comparison to today.
Unless a rumour, such as Pall Bearer having his gall bladder removed, was picked up as a national piece, then it may only have been people in one local area that found out about it immediately.
