You know, the main event as the last match really only became prominent in the PPV era of wrestling. Before that, it was common for the main event to take place in the middle of the show, right before intermission.

In fact, I haven't been to a house show in a few years, but I've been to more than one where the main was in the middle of the show, right before intermission, and the last match on the card was just a regular match.

Anywho, my point is that it's not totally unheard of for the main event not to close the show.
