SeaQuest

I've been watching this on Netflix recently since it was recommended to me a while ago. I'd always dismissed the show as heavily derivative--and it kinda is--but I've found myself enjoying it immensely.

What's even more surprising to me is that while a lot of it seems like a pastiche of other shows from a similar time frame (Including Star Trek: TNG), it also seems like it influenced later sci fi shows, like Stargate SG-1 (not surprising, given the DeLuise connection) and Star Trek Voyager (though it was sort of concurrent).

There were a few really bad episodes (seriously? An evil psychic cloud underwater?), but it's been mostly good shit. Even the few episodes of the last season I've watched so far (Hello there, Mr. Ironsides), even if the politics are kinda silly.

Surprisingly good cast, too. Maybe it's just because I'd written it off as a cheap knockoff all those years ago that I'm surprised, though.

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”
