Doesn't have to be ground breaking, just seeing a thousand Slayer like bands and them being so proud of it, that's the confusion I have. Yeah, they play good but it's nothing worth investing in unless you're friends with a band or something. These days they book bands based on knowing people more than the band actually being interesting, at least from my friends band experiences.
I actually do make music for fun, I'm not a musician traditionally and when I want work on a track I don't sit there and say "I love this band so I want play the same genre".
These bands have the talent to play sub genres of music, so why not utilize more gear and instruments? The problem I'm talking about is some bands are dead set on catering to their fan base and the idea of adding different elements to their sound is usually boo'ed upon by people who are into that scene because it's not true to the roots.
