One improvement I've noticed is the use of flashbacks to Dexter (and Deb's) childhood in place of Dexter conversing with the imaginary ghost of Harry.
Those conversations really bothered me since they were introduced in season 3, because they gave the impression that Dexter was losing his mind. Dexter isn't mentally unstable; he's a very deliberate and organised (or in his words 'neat') monster. He's in control of his mind and emotions, otherwise he would have been caught years ago.
