What was the point in Carol even going missing for an episode anyway? It didn't really add much apart from maybe 3 or 4 minutes overall of minor "oh hey Carol died too" dialogue.
Simply put; She was the one with basic training to deliver the baby. Her not being there leads to Lori's death.
