Merlin wasn't cancelled by the BBC from what I read, it was the creators who decided to end it. Sherlock's postponement could be anything really, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Stephen Moffat are all very, very busy.

Elementary is quite good actually. It's not a patch on Sherlock and it's a lot more US crime drama-ish as you might expect, but Jonny Lee Miller is great.
