First off, Bret is 55 years old. Even if his career didn't get suddenly ended, I highly doubt he'd still be a regular wrestler at this point. Not everybody is Flair and wants to work into their 60's and beyond.

Beyond that though, others have summed it up. WCW was already way into its downturn when Bret got injured. A lot say the slide started right after Starrcade 1997...I personally subscribe to the Finger Poke of Doom really being what started WCW's slide. Nash ending Goldberg's streak was fine, but to have him simply lay down for Hogan and give him the belt pretty much pissed away the entire streak angle.
