According to Sakurai, both his studio and Namco are putting a bigger effort and focus for the game's online modes as both a lesson they learned from Brawl and as a way to expand some of the ideas from Brawl to make the game better.
Also wants it to be more "customizable" to cater to all the different groups that play the Smash series.

Sakurai answered, "The idea of Brawl's 'carefree brawling' motto was to get rid of as many restraints as possible and allow people to choose whatever play approach they liked. Sakurai accepts responsibility for the poorly conceived online previously, and he promises something a lot more cohesive in the future that will allow for different playstyles.
