Rather than make bets on who I think will be champions in a year based on who will probably be champs next week, I'll use a bit of WWE style strategy. Seeing where the current crop of champions were last year, I;ll take guys in a similar position right now and assume they'll be champs next year.
Raw
World: Currently Chris Benoit. This time last year he was in the upper-mid card on Smackdown having come out of yet another world title program (without actually winning the belt). There was also some meandering tag team stuff in there. Having a go at the US title.
Intercontinental: Randy Orton. Was still in Evolution, just starting a feud with Shawn Michaels. Very much up and coming.
Tag Team: La Resistance. Had just defeated Rob Van Dam and Kane for the tag team titles. OK, the members were slightly different (Dupree instead of Conway), but that's a petty matter.
Womens: Trish Stratus. I don't know, what WAS she doing this time last year?
Smackdown
WWE: Eddie Guerrero. Mid card. Just turned heel.
United States: John Cena. Just come out of a brief WWE title program, but was clearly a young guy whom they had big future plans for.
Tag Team: The Dudleys. On Raw, still stale, were face at the time in some forgettable feuds.
Cruiserweight: Rey Mysterio. Can't remember. A couple of months past a failed feud with the Big Show, probably lost in the shuffle.
The best current day equivalents thus should be able to predict next years champions...
Raw
World: Rob Van Dam. Just like Benoit last year, he's on Smackdown now, he's been in some meandering tag team stuff, he's about to have a crack at the US title and didn't he face Eddie a few weks ago? Or am I imagining things?
Intercontinental: Matt Hardy. Uhhh, here's my logic - he's also in a stable (well, him and Lita... that's not even a tag team, but whatever). Kane is apparently about to feud with Michaels, but since he doesn't fit the mould, and Hardy is feuding with Kane, we'll lump him in.
Tag Team: La Resistance. They won it this time last year, they won it this time this year, they'll probably win it this time next year. Oh, but substitute Grenier for someone else - let's pick another random OVW star... Carly Colon with a fake French Accent. He'll be renamed to Thierry Colon I'd imagine.
Womens: Gail Kim. Nobody can remember what Trish did last year, in a years time nobody will remember what Gail Kim is doing now.
Smackdown
WWE: Who the hell has just turned heel? Booker T perhaps?
United States: JBL. He's the closest to matching the requirements, so I'm sorry. Then again, Doug Basham just faced Eddie (was it for the title? Do I care?), so I'm changing it to him.
Tag Team: Hurricane & Rosey. Look, I don't make the rules, alright...
Cruiserweight: Oh, I don't know, Kidman.
