SPOILER: show hopefully john hurt is not "the real" ninth doctor as some early online rumours proffered - think him being the valeyard would be far more interesting.

Hurt will be the "lost Doctor", aka, the one who actually made the decision / pulled the trigger on the ending of the Time War that wiped out Gallifrey. Basically the regeneration that the Doctor has pretty much disowned and force himself to forget about, in an attempt to distance himself from his own acts.
