Brandon Lyon DFA'ed after his season completely got derailed in the past couple of weeks. He was pitching well about a month ago and I actually thought he could have been the Mets' best trade chip.
Gonna be a weird trade deadline for the Mets, actually. They've been playing well lately but they're not going to be buyers as they're too far back and have too many question marks to realistically make a run. But they won't necessarily be sellers either because there's just not much to sell. Marlon Byrd is their best trade chip right now, but as as good as he's been who is going to part with a lot for a 35 year old journeyman outfielder? It'll be the same thing as Scott Hairston last year, they really aren't being offered anything worthwhile so they'll keep him. Probably ditto for LaTroy Hawkins who has been good but a middling Single A player is about all you could expect for a 40 year old reliever.
Everybody assumed John Buck would be trade bait, but he's barely hitting above the Mendoza line and they need somebody to catch until d'Arnaud is ready. Could actually see the Mets trying to re-sign Buck to be a mentor/backup for d'Arnaud next year, actually.
