WoW still has a pretty decent RP population, depending on the server.

At the expense of sounding too much like a gamer hipster, the rise of popularity in the MMO genre has made it easier for non-gamers to embrace the genre. As a result you get these fake role-playing fans who claim to love the games but still have that stigma over actual RPing as being incredibly lame. Not to point the finger or anything, but the type of person who enjoys Big Bang Theory is the type of person playing MMOs these days, because it's "cool to be geeky" now, while only half-assedly playing the part and still secretly making fun of anyone who truly appreciates it.

Seeing as most MMOs these days are following the f2p model (and let's face it, with the WoW elephant in the room, it's going to be hard for a new IP to really gain a foothold in the market), you're more likely to come across these "nouveau riche" type of MMO players who like the association with playing an MMO without actually appreciating what the genre is supposed to be about. But if you find the right server or group of people it can be a really enjoyable experience.
