Every Playstation console (and at least one of the portables) has had an issue that prevents operation of the system. Two had disc read problems, one had problems with sizable runs of its proprietary Cell processor. PSP had issues with the screen, reading UMDs, and even the physical inputs.
And I'm sorry, but things like breaking and catching fire don't interfere with the operation of the system? What?
Like Kalyx said, everything I've mentioned is well-documented and there's more out there. But I focused on Sony because it only goes back a few gens and flies in stark contrast with your claims that they're known for reliable hardware. They're known for the opposite. And while you haven't had any problems, that would be like me saying there weren't launch issues with GTA Online because I didn't lose my character or my car or progress.

Are either really that surprising, though? I mean, I hoped DR3 would be good, but neither looked all that impressive (visuals aside).

Ain't that the truth.
On the plus side, it encouraged me to build a new PC. I will probably get one console or the other eventually, but both companies did nothing but turn me off their new hardware.
