In both of these cases, they weren't meant to catch on like they did.

Bryan started the "YES!" thing as a weasly, chicken shit heel. The idea was that he was going to celebrate every single match as if it was the greatest victory of his life. It wasn't until Wrestlemania 2 years ago that the crowd really started chanting it, and it just stuck from there. Oddly enough, that match lasted only 18 seconds.

Stone Cold also developed "What?" as a heel, but it was just too hilarious not to catch on.
