He is supposed to be all about that, but everyone has to learn and sometimes you have to learn via tragedy. Perhaps killing Zod to save that family is what turns him into the hero we all know. In the first movie he's very objective oriented: stop the terraforming machine, save the bus full of kids, fight Zod, fight the others. That whole experience, and not having to deal with anyone on his level, might show him the error of his ways. Another experience could be fighting alongside someone else that only does what he has to do to finish the big goal in Batman when Bruce endangers some citizens in order to stop Lex, forcing Clark to stop what he's doing to save them. That could show him what he will become if he continues down that path, and turns him into what we all know. Also sets up the big drama moment of tension between the two of them as they explain their motivations and why they think each other is wrong.

I believe you're right and that's kind of the way they are going though, DC's stuff is generally more dark and depressing so it probably won't be too many smiles and laughs aside from when he's with Lois. They just tend to steer towards more realistic consequences I suppose (or as realistic as something like that can be). Personally I enjoy that style more than the upbeat tone of the Marvel movies. Iron Man 3 especially was guilty of this. It was probably the worst super hero movie, other than Batman & Robin, that I have ever seen in my opinion. Not because of the Mandarin twist, or the fire breathing, or even super Pepper, but because Tony turned from depressed to sarcastic to happy go lucky to depressed at the drop of a hat and then all of a sudden became a super spy breaking into compounds.

But I'm getting away from the original point, I think the nod to the Christopher Reeve movies in the last one kind of shows they recognize where they have been and hopefully what they will go back towards once Clark has grown into his own and has some hero experience under his belt. Batman likely will slap him around for a bit in the beginning just on that alone until Clark wises up and just knocks the wind out of his sails.
