I will say I kinda loved SVR 06 and SVR 07's story modes. Yeah the voiceover limited your options for who you could play as, but they still had a pretty solid list available plus you felt compelled to at least play several times through since Raw and SD had their own set of storylines plus there were different ones for face and heel.

I did play the everloving shit out of HCTP's story, though. Probably went through it over a dozen times. Same exact storylines every year no matter what show you were on, but I'd always mix up the rosters and face/heel alignments and it somehow was enough to keep it feeling a bit fresh.
