Well, Rude did have a lot of success outside of the WWE (including world title runs in both WCCW and WCW) but I see your point. So thinking about it in that sense, (hypothetically) if AJ Styles went to WWE and had another 10 years with the company...... would he be a WWE guy or a TNA guy?
