Did he actually say "9/11"? As in the exact words "Nine Eleven"? Because if he did, you might at least have a point that that was a poor choice of words.

If he said "September 11th" then... well... that's just the date. Unless the name of the month or the number 11 gets changed to a new word you're going to have to deal with them being said together to reference that specific date on the calender.
