I read an interview where Chris Hemsworth said in order to defeat Ultron, Thor would have to return to Asgard and bring back something to Earth that was of immense power to turn the tide in the favor of the Avengers

Thanos put the malfunctioning virus in the Chitauri's technology, in the event that they lost their war on Earth, because Thanos is always 5 steps ahead of everyone else. He probably knew mankind would try to use the technology in some way and his virus would turn their own technology against them.
