The stock of the US Title would plummet on Axel, he's in a comedy gimmick right now (albeit a good one) that's getting him over with a certain section of the crowd, but putting the title on him (especially in that fashion) won't elevate him or the title (see his IC Title run).

A few notes:
1. The way it was handled, only one person came out looking strong: Cena. At least in my scenario, Rusev came out of it with something as well. What they went with hurt Rusev more than what I did.
2. If you can't book a strong heel without him losing once in a while, especially in a flukey manner, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG! Hell, have him destroy Axel on Smackdown in a backstage segment if you are worried about him keeping his heat.
3. It's a cliche. I'll admit that it's a cliche. But there's a reason why it's a cliche: IT WORKS! Would you rather watch a match because person A more or less tortured person B into making their valet take the match, making person B look like a complete bitch in the process. Or Person B, angry about Person A costing them something they worked hard to win and hold, calls them out to take out a level of revenge.
4. If John Cena is the big star we're supposed to believe that he is, this match shouldn't even NEED the US Title. This something that always gets me with WWE. They feel like Cena NEEDS to have some piece of hardware. And if he was as good as they claim, after 10 years, then he shouldn't. Besides, when/if Reigns starts to falter, they're going to need Cena ready to take the slack.
5. I think this is the most important thing right here: Curtis Axel of 2015 is much better than the Curtis Axel that won the IC title in 2013. Give him a shot where he goes through a couple of decent competitors. If he proves himself to be more than a flash in the pan, you could have a future star on your hands. If not, have him get beaten by Owens or Zayn or whoever is ready by then.
