Lucha Underground works for a number of different reasons.
It benefits from less is more. Having only an hour of TV, the writing is tighter than either TNA or WWE. You don't get the sense of booking on the fly.
Wrestlers are not over-exposed. You don't see the same old faces every week cutting the same old promos.
It is different to any other product on TV. In terms of wrestling, production etc. Wrestlers like Pimpinela are treated seriously than a similar character in the WWE or TNA would be.
There is a lot of 'logic' in the booking, you know who is feuding with who. You know why.
They have shown that even in a loss ie King Cuerno losing to Johnny Mundo, a wrestler can still come out of the feud looking strong and enhanced.
Clear payoffs - ie very few matches finishing on interference. Feuds taking place and being settled in the ring.
As well as the short feuds like Mundo-Cuerno, you have the longer burn of Pentagon Jnr and his master, Black Lotus.
It is actually reshaping the wrestling landscape in much the same way as ECW did all those years ago. They are taking very tired ideas - ie the coffin match, heel authority figure etc and breathing new life into them.
When they use a gimmick match they have meaning.
I'd strongly recommend everyone to check out the Coffin Match between Fenix and Mil Muertes.
The use of actors in acting roles also helps.
Dario Cueto works because he is an actor and that is his job, as opposed to wrestlers trying to be actors and being more wooden than a forest.
We know that HHH, Dixie, the McMahon's are never going to fuck off from our TVs, they are also too vain to allow themselves to be booked to allow someone to get over them in the long run. By having an actor in the heel authority role, an actor who can be written out, rather than the real owner (who even if they lose a feud we know they will be back out in 3 months time), means that LU can have Cueto being defeated in the end, in otherwords there is the potential for a heel authority feud to actually have a satisfactory finish.
Also - LU has shown how the WWE and TNA missed the boat on some guys and how actually with good booking, and thought, even someone like Ezekiel Jackson can be an interesting character. ie his confession promo was miles better than anything we've seen on WWE or TNA recently. I mean when you look at it - you can say 'oh it is just like TNA, just a load of WWE retreads' but they've managed to make the characters compelling enough that you don't really think 'oh he was that jobber on the WWE'.
Oh yeah - the years have certainly taken their toll on Vamp.
So he fucked them in school. All I know is there were rumours. There were rumours he was into field hockey players. There were rumours (So I applied basically), he was gone the next day, (I went on their team), it's like he was gone, it was like so hush hush, they were so quiet about it, and the next thing you know...
