The thing is, there isn't really anything special about the KOTR. It is just a bunch of midcarders in normal matches trying to become King of the Midcarders. It has worked for some guys (Austin, Angle, etc.), but for many others it did next to nothing (Gunn, Mabel, etc.).
I think the main reason that they nixed it was because of the brand split. It wouldn't have the same effect anymore if it was done between both shows, and what would the winner get anyways? Maybe if they gave the winner a shot at the IC/US title or something, then it would be a bit more interesting. But I see no need to bring it back otherwise.
