It's not too surprising that this and other nods are featured in the level-making game. Last year, producer Takashi Tezuka told Nintendo World Report that prior to Mario Maker, Nintendo explored creating a new Mario Paint for Wii U. (It would've been a perfect fit for the GamePad.)
