The NL East is far from set. It's a 5 game lead but they still play the Nats 6 more times and the Nats still have a ton of games against the awful NL East just like the Mets do. And if the Nats beat the Mets in their series next week the division will be really close. The Mets need all hands on deck to avoid blowing this opportunity.
Again, this wouldn't have been an issue if Harvey/Boras had been up front at the start of the year about wanting to maintain a hard cap. The Mets would have accommodated it and either started his season late or skipped more starts earlier in the year. But instead he pissed and moaned about being skipped or having his starts spread out via 6-man rotation. He said he could handle it. And now he's backing out when they need him most.
Even if he comes back tomorrow and backtracks/says he'll keep going into October, he's done irreversible damage to his image in the eyes of fans after talking the talk all year trying to look like the alpha male. And if he really does only have 180 innings, that's 2 more starts tops. I could see him getting booed off the field at Citi on 9/14.
