Bungie rumored to be planning on adding non-cosmetic items for the game's micro-transaction system based on supposed evidence recently found.

Quote:
As of right now, microtransactions in Destiny don’t affect gameplay at all. Emotes are the only items that can be purchased with real money—or, more accurately, with the new currency Silver, itself only attainable through a real-money purchase. But some players have voiced concern after spotting evidence that could potentially be changing: a reference to consumable items in the menu of the game’s Silver-only store, the Eververse Trading Company.

In the Eververse menu under Item Returns, a disclaimer notes that “consumable items are nonreturnable.” None of Destiny‘s cosmetic items, currently limited to shaders, emotes, and vehicles, fall into that category. Some players dug deeper by datamining the 2.0.1 patch, and discovered a number of new consumables that were added with the new update.
Bungie denied the rumors although worded their response in a way that is currently being implied only certain buff-based items won't be purchasable with real money.

Quote:
That’s when Smith entered the picture, taking to Twitter to calm the nerves of players upset at a potential pay-to-win future for the game.

We aren’t (nor are we planning) on selling consumables that buff King’s Fall drop rates for Silver.

— Luke Smith (@thislukesmith) October 14, 2015

Though Smith’s comments do clarify that one type of buff from the uncovered items will not be a part of the microtransaction economy, the specificity of his answer has led many players to theorize that other gameplay-affecting consumables will, at some point, be sold for real money, whose time-saving starter packs being a particularly likely candidate.

While fan speculation remains just that, the worry underlines a larger issue. Until Bungie clearly conveys their long-terms principles for microtransactions in Destiny, the uncertainty surrounding the game’s future—and whether or not players who pay will get a different gameplay experience than those who don’t— will remain.
