Yeah it really harkens back to the beanie baby crap, there's just too much limited quantity that you really need to make a commitment to get some of it. Arguably not worth the hassle.
They seem to be getting more popular in general though. I mean, between amiibo, Disney Infinity, Skylanders, and hell even Lego Dimensions now... seems to be the flavour-of-the-month type toy for the foreseeable future
