let's not totally ignore the arkham knight option too, where joker didn't actually kill Jason but tormented him and broke him mentally to turn him against batman - not out of the realm of possibility that they'd just rip that idea off too to explain it. like joker kidnaps jason, makes bruce believe he is dead but in reality is keeping him somewhere, convincing him that batman doesn't care enough to save him, that joker's the only one who really gives a shit about him, something happens to joker, jason swears to avenge him by taking up the mantle etc

i'm not saying that would be any better bc i still hate the concept of jason as joker but it's a plausible road for them to take
