If Savage had beaten Steamboat at WrestleMania 3 I'm pretty sure the crowd wouldn't have expressed their enjoyment because the match was really good technically. They'd be upset that the guy they wanted to win didn't win. The same logic applies to today. The outcome is always more important at the moment than the technical wrestling value of the match. They wanted to see a certain outcome and didn't get it. So they booed.
