I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with it, but it's not a good character to be introduced as. Had he been around for a year or so and swapped to it? Sure, no problem. But you're not getting a dude over with some kitschy shit entrance and painfully contrived video game references alone.

Put a guy in there with a fairly bad-ass if generic theme, have him fight hard, and pop in some references to him wanting to be a role model? He's at least got a fighting chance (and two hands).
