Well there is more to the Olympics than sports the US is good in.
The US media focuses in on sports where there are US hopes which gives you a skewed impression.
For example you won't get coverage of the women's marathon if there is no hope for a US medal. But you will get coverage of beach vollyball if there is. It's the same in the UK, some guy who is a fencer who never gets any coverage at all for 4 years because he looks like he's doing well there will suddenly be huge media interest.
Really you ought to watch different media. see if you can get Canadian coverage or something for a different perspective.
