It was (a large) part his performance, and also something about the camera slowly pushing in and out while he would talk. It was almost like we could feel the centuries of trying to essentially save history from... well, himself drove him mad, and we were at least temporarily going on that ride as well.
But he did kinda have that Kenneth Branaugh style Shakespeare play movie quality to him. If he redid Othello today, pretty sure this guy'd get the role.
