Certainly whatever little bit of extra money Vince could squeeze out of controlling that isn't worth the embarrassment of having a guy turn down a multi million dollar contract and signing with the competition.

Just pure greed on his and WWE executives end.
Similar to the way Vince & co saw how big of a gold mine embracing social media could be for the company after Zack Ryder's success, they saw the money their talent was raking in from third party deals and wanted it all for themselves instead.
Plus it helps keep the investors happy after them being pissed over the Saudi deals and other issues these past couple years.
