I dunno, PRIDE was a lot about spectacle and politics. But that’s what made it so great. It embraces the pro wrestling influences of MMA, pretty much making every event must-see... and I was a late adopter—only getting into MMA because of TUF and Griffin v Bonnar.

They understood how to develop mythos and lore for their fighters. I remember seeing Fedor’s ground and pound for the first time and not being able to comprehend how someone could punch so fucking hard. He seemed larger than life and honestly like a titan. Nowadays, the guys are superior in every way, but they don’t feel like it. They seem human and boring and it’s because Dana denigrates his fighters so he doesn’t have to pay them.
