That still feels kinda lazy and "shoehorny", because kids called other kids fags and queers all the time back then; it wasn't built up to be this thing that somehow rivaled the n-word until somewhere in the early 00s. That throwaway line at the beginning of season one shouldn't be the sole signpost to him "actually being gay the whole time" at a time in life where kids even calling other kids "a virgin" was perjorative, even though
they all damn well should be and the kids throwning that around don't even really know what they're saying. Of all the threads and intertwining narratives the show has, if Will actually coming out is really the endgame, they could have written it A LOT better.
It's still not as bad as the Young Justice thing. "I'm mad at you for stealing my girlfriend - [time skip] - nevermind, we're lovers now", but it is pretty close.
There's better ways to accomplish representation than just hamfistedly inserting it for representation's sake.
