The story was that FOX wanted Punk on their WWE Backstage show. Punk didn't want to actually work for WWE and, notably, WWE didn't want to work with Punk again either. So it was strictly a FOX deal with Punk and Punk had no involvement at all with anyone from WWE that wasn't on that show.

Vince being gone would normally change things but Punk and Hunter didn't have a good relationship either by all accounts.
