As for Hunter getting sympathy, I think the reason why it would work is because he wouldn't be looking for sympathy. He would basically play up thats he's never done things on his won, always had help and now he wants to prove to himself that he's the best, on his own. I think the fans would get behind that, especially since they already cheer for him anyway. He would have to maintain his badass persona.

That's perfect. Let's face it, fans right now don't want to cheer your "regular" babyface anymore. Everyone likes tough ass-kickers. Fans love it when the so called "good guy" acts like a heel. Well, I hope they do this situation cause I would be wayyyyy more interested in the angle then.
