And yeah, the Yanks picture (forgot his name) shouldn't of thrown up and in like that. He should of just threw it at his stomach or whatever.
Also when I played ball, I hated when the 1ST Basemen would cover the whole bag. You can break your ankle like that when your running hard and your trying to get your foot on the bag. I played 1ST Base and I always had the side of my cleets on the bag so I wouldn't get spiked or whatever.

Pitchers throw behined batters all the time and get the same reaction from a batter as hitting them, so yeah, I think that was the intent.
