First, make sure you have body armor. You will take some hits, and you will need it. Also, use a good weapon, with which your skill is ranked high.

The key to this mission is to ALWAYS expect more people to attack. There are basically three "waves." When you start off, two guys will be shooting behind you, so keep them in mind. Crouch and strafe across the entrance and take out as many people as you can. They're all over the room, so look to your left. Even after it seems everyone is gone and you're destroying the white tanks, keep looking and roll when you shoot. When you're almost done destroying all of the tanks, a couple more guys come at you from the middle of the room. After all the tanks are destroyed, shoot out the last wave.

The one guard you may be referring to is the very last one, propped on a box outside the entrance. He has a sniper rifle. What I would do is crouch behind the shelves just near the entrance, crawl out and shoot him quickly. After you kill the guards, you're done and completely safe.
