It's not just Gene Hackman.
In Lois & Clark, He was portrayed as a totally awesome character, despite some problems with other characters in the show.
In the current Justice League Cartoon, he's beyond awesome even.
There's an episode where the Justice League deals with a parallel Universe JL, one who became drastically altered by the death of their flash. They developed a totalitarian view towards crimefighting, one which involved Superman and buddies doing something that the normal Supes and co wouldn't do...Kill for the "greater good." Ruthless and uncompromising.
So the real Superman makes a deal with the Devil: Lex Luthor. LL helps Supes rebuild one of his toys, a power disruptor, to use against the other Justice League.
The coolest part is, once he's taken the alternate KL down, he faces Superman, makes a comment on how it could be so sweet...But that a deal's a deal. He then turns over the gun...
